Timor 1942 By Christopher CH Wray Australian commandos at war with the Japanese
In December 1941, following Japan’s surprise attacks on Pearl Harbour, Malaya and the Phillipines, Australia faced imminent invasion from the north.
A small Allied contingent composed mainly of Australians and code-named Sparrow Force was dispatched to occupy Timor, only to be overwhelmed almost at once by a massive Japanese invasion of western Timor.
The remnants fled eastward and eventually joined the 2:2 Australian Independent Company, which made an orderly retreat into Timor’s mountainous interior. Over subsequent months they conducted an unremitting and highly successful guerilla war.
Written largely from eyewitness accounts, Timor 1942 is the exciting true story of that campaign.
