`Alfred looked at Marama and nodded. Without their saying anything, the two elder Browns had joined forces. They both knew that Ruth was like; they both knew what Oppy was like. The thought of Oppy and Ruth working together was appalling.'
And appalling is a good word for what happens when Oppy starts investigating how governments work in our `primitive society'. The Ministry of the Future, The Department of Equity, The Squires of the Square Chairs, Parliament itself — not to mention that great national pastime, the Blotto Topple — all suffer from her extraterrestrial scrutiny.
Gaelyn Gordon held a Frank Sargeson Writing Fellowship in 1992, has been awarded the Choysa Bursary for Children's writers, and three of her books (including the first Alfred Brown book) have been short-listed for the AIM Awards. She and her husband live close to Raglan on a small block with trees, a stream, two dogs, three goats, and an indeterminate number of geese. She likes making and flying Japanese fighting kites and from time to time she has appeared in odd plays written by her friends.
