Before you can sell on BookFair.com.au, you need to be verified as an Australian bookseller, either an individual living and selling in Australia or a company or business registered in Australia and operating in Australia. You may be an established bookseller or intending to establish a bookselling business. Booksellers currently selling on eBay or similar ecommerce sites are welcome as are shopkeepers with a bricks & mortar shop. You don't have to have a bookshop to sell on BookFair, an online bookselling business is ok.
BookFair.com.au would like to encourage booksellers who provide the highest levels of customer service, with reasonable postage, packing and handling fees, and with no hidden fees or charges, and without onerous terms and conditions. If you don't fit these criteria, then you may be better selling somewhere else.
If you would like to sell on BookFair.com.au, first register an account here. If you have a bookselling business, please use a login id that is some form of your business name. Please don't use cryptic names like abc123 or jedi-knight, etc.. Your customers should know who they are dealing with. Be proud to represent yourself and your business. If possible, please do not use a free email account such as hotmail when you register.
When you have completed the registration form, you will receive an email from BookFair.com.au to confirm your registration. Once your account has been activated, then Contact Us giving details of where you are or have been selling. If you're selling online, you may be asked to insert a code into your About Me page or a listing to confirm your identity. Once we've confirmed that you are a genuine bookseller, and your feedback indicates a high level of customer service, your account will be upgraded to allow you to sell.
Initially, listing on BookFair.com.au will be free and each bookseller will have a free store. Extras such as featured listings will be charged a small fee. There is a small percentage charged as a sales fee upon a successful sale. At present, automatic relisting is free. Eventually, there will be a small listing and relisting fee to discourage booksellers from dumping unsaleable items on BookFair.com.au, but the listing fees will always be small. We're trying to maintain a high overall quality of listings on BookFair.com.au.
Auction listings are not available on BookFair, just Buy Out (Buy Now) listings. Listing periods available will be 30, 60 or 90 days. Short duration listings with automatic relist will appear more often in the Recently Listed and Ending Soon boxes. Longer duration listings will save you a little in listing fees, when they are introduced, but will give your items less time on the front page.
At present, the maximum number of automatic relists is set to 10, but please limit your automatic relisting to:
30 days - Max 10 automatic relists
60 days - Please limit to 5 automatic relists
90 days - Please limite to 3 automatic relists |

BookFair Australia is not an auction site. All items on BookFair are available for immediate purchase, using the Buy Out or Buy Now button. |
|
You can use the Buy Out or Buy Now button to purchase the item immediately without having to place a bid.
The Buy Out or Buy Now option will appear on the item details page, you will be asked to confirm your intention to buy the item before the sale is concluded. Buy Outs or Buy Nows cannot be retracted. |
|
The auction watch features notifies you of newly listed auctions which contain keywords you have chosen. For example if you are looking for a new Digital Camera you could enter in those keywords from within your members area area. Each time a new auction is listed containing those keywords you will be notified via email. |
|
The Item Watch features lets you keep a close eye on any item without having to but it. This feature means you can be kept up to date on how an listing is doing. You can watch any listing by clicking on the “Watch this item” link on any listing page. |
|
To list your item simply click on the “Sell” link found on the header navigational bar. The listing process is split up into several main sections, notably:-
- Category selection
- Item Details
- Auction Settings
- Shipping and Payment
- Listing preview
- Listing confirmation
The listing process is developed in such a way that you are guided through every step seamlessly.
The first part of the process is to choose the category you wish to list your item in, this can be revised at any time by using the “Previous Step” navigation button.
Step two enables you to enter your item title and description, a full wysiwyg editor is in place to enable you to use HTML descriptions.
If you have a voucher code to redeem this can be entered just below the description field.
Moving on to step three, this is the biggest stage of the listing process. On this step you can set the following:-
· Auction type:-
Standard Auction - This is a single quantity auction
Dutch Auction - enables you to list a multiple quantity auction, for example if you have 100 pens to sell you can list all of these together in a single lot. Bidders will be able to select how many they wish to bid for.
- Currency:-
All listings on BookFair are in Australian Dollars
· Quantity:-
This field is only active if listing a Dutch auction, please see above for an explanation of this listing type
· Auction Starts At:-
This requires you to enter the minimum bid you are willing to accept, you can also set a reserve price to ensure you do not sell the item for this amount. Please see below for more information on this.
· Reserve Price:-
Enabling a reserve price affectively means you will not sell the item for less than the amount set, for example you can set the start price at 5.00 but only accept winning bids over 10.00, should a bid be placed for 9.99 the item will close without a winner.
· Buy out (if available):-
Buy out allows you to set an amount you are willing to sell the item for – straight out. For example you can set the start price to 5.00 but offer interested parties the option to buy the item immediately for 10.00.
You can also list Buy Out Only auctions, these auctions remove all bidding options meaning the listing can only be purchased for a set amount. To set a buy out only auction you need to set the buy out value to be exactly equal with the start bid.
· Offer-Range (if available):-
You can set a price bracket in which you are willing to listing to offer, for example if you set the price brackets from 15.00 to 20.00 interested parties will be able to offer you an amount within these brackets, you can opt whether to accept or decline these offers at any time via the members area.
· Bid increment:-
This option can be used to set your own custom bid increment if preferred.
· Item featuring (if available):-
The following options are available to you (fees may apply), these will highlight your item on site to ensure they reach more visitors:-
§ Home page featured
§ Category featured
§ Bold text
§ Highlighted background
· Set start/end time:-
You can either opt to list your item right away and set a defined number of days for it to be live for or you also have the option to define your own custom start/end time.
· Private Auction:-
Private auction will hide the bidders identity on the item details page
· Image upload:-
To accompany your item you can either upload images from your local computer or enter the URL of an image(s) hosted elsewhere
· Media upload:-
In addition to images you can also upload media files, please note only .avi/.mpeg/.mov are supported. (At present, media uploads are not allowed on BookFair.)
· Auto Re-List
For convenience you can opt to have your items automatically re-listed for you, options are available to allow you to select whether the item should be re-listed if sold and how many re-list attempts should be made.
On the next step you can set your shipping and payment preferences including your shipping rates and available methods of delivery.
Proceeding on, you can then review the listing and make changes if required, please note you can still edit your listing once live via the members area.
The final step provides you with listing confirmation.

Listing Policy for Sellers
It is your responsibility to ensure you are legally allowed to sell items you list.
Prohibited Items must not be listed, please check before listing. Listings fees (if applicable) for any prohibited items listed and removed as violating, will not be refunded.
"Links to other sites:
Sellers are permitted to advertise other sites where they sell and to provide clickable links to other sites where they sell, provided that they provide an equivalent advertisement or clickable link on that other site back to the home page of BookFair.com.au
For example:
- if you provide a text advertisement in your BookFair About Me page for your other selling site, then you must provide a similar text advertisement for BookFair.com.au on your About Me page on the other site.
-
if you provide a clickable link in your BookFair listings to your other selling site, then you must provide a similar clickable link to BookFair.com.au on every listing on the other site,
-
if you enter your website on your BookFair profile page, BookFair will turn that into a clickable link, and you must provide a clickable link to BookFair.com.au from a similar page on your website.
The principle is that you are permitted to provide equivalent advertisements from BookFair to your site and from your site to BookFair.
This would normally preclude advertisements or links to sites such as eBay, as their policies prohibit such advertisements or links."
Categorisation: Items must be accurately represented, described and listed in the most appropriate category.
Identical Listings: You may not list more than 1 identical item. If you have a multiple quantity available, please enter the quantity available when listing the item.
Dropshipping: If you drop ship (you do not keep goods in stock, but instead transfer orders to a wholesaler) you must outline the expected time of delivery as well as clearly stating where the item will be sent from in the Listing Description. Do not list items that you or your supplier do not hold in stock.
Listing No Item: Listings not offering an actual item cannot be listed. For example, listings with the primary purpose of advertising.
Selling on Multiple Venues: You may not list the exact same item for sale through another venue which offers instant purchase/auction. This is to prevent the possibility of two buyers winning the exact same item. For example, you cannot list the same book on BookFair and eBay at the same time. If you have multiple quantities of the same item, you may advertise the item on multiple sites.
Keyword Spamming: Title "keyword spamming" (adding brand names or non related keywords to gain attention) to manipulate search results is not allowed.
Currency and GST: All prices are to be shown in Australian dollars. If you are not registered to collect GST, then you must not add GST to the price of the item. If you are registered to collect GST, then you must show the GST-inclusive price. GST can only be added to the final price if the payment instructions CLEARLY state that GST will be added to the final price. Note: Only sellers that are GST registered can collect GST.
Excessive Postage: Postage & handling should include a reasonable cost of actual postage, packaging and handling. Excessive postage charges are strictly prohibited and will result in the cancellation of the sale or account suspension.
Credit Card Surcharges: Sellers may not charge surcharges for receiving payments unless the item was paid for by credit card, using the seller's merchant credit card account. Merchants are allowed to recoup the cost of merchant service fees directly from consumers who purchased using a credit card. If a merchant does decide to impose a surcharge they must clearly state in the payment instructions that a credit card fee will apply and the amount of the fee. Other costs associated with receiving payments cannot be added to the final price. The fee charged by PayPal, PayMate and similar payment services is not a "merchant service fee" even if your customer funded the payment from a credit card, and this fee should not be added as a surcharge.
As a seller of an item that was successfully sold by auction or Buy Out, you are obligated to complete the sale and promptly forward the item to the successful buyer on completion of the transaction.
You cannot refuse to sell an item because the final price is not what you expected. If you want to make sure the final price is not too low, ensure the start price is set to the minimum you would accept.
BookFair reserves the right to remove any listings that are in breach of our User Agreement or Listing Policy. BookFair reserves the right to remove any listings at its sole discretion.
Violation of this policy may result in temporary or permanent account suspension. |
The follow are suggested Book Condition Guidelines that may be used by booksellers on BookFair. However, they are not mandatory and individual booksellers may use their own book condition descriptions. If condition is important, please ask the bookseller about the condition of a book before buying.
NEW - Brand New Book. Never read. In some cases, the book may have some dust or scuffing from it's time in the shop.
EXCELLENT - Used Book with nil or few minor defects or faults which will be noted.
VERY GOOD - Used Book showing some signs of wear. Minor creasing to spine. Defects will be noted.
GOOD - The average used book that is totally complete and intact. May have moderate creasing to spine. Defects will be noted.
FAIR - A worn used book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title page, etc. May have substantial creasing to spine. Defects or faults will be noted.
READING COPY - A used book that is sufficiently worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. Any missing maps or plates must be noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted, and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.
EX-LIBRARY - Will always be noted, if applicable, no matter what the condition of the book.
BOOK CLUB - Will always be noted, if applicable, no matter what the condition of the book.
REMAINDER MARKS, BOOKPLATES, PREVIOUS OWNER'S NAME - Will always be noted, if applicable.
REMAINDER MARKS
In order to clear its warehouse, a publisher will often offer the unsold (remainder) portion of a printing at a discount. Such books are usually marked on the page edges so that they cannot be returned for a full-price refund. As with most changes made to a book after the initial printing, a remainder mark reduces the value of a book to less than the same edition would bring unmarked. Individual collectors differ in how distasteful they find a remainder mark to be, but the mark and its location should always be noted in a book description.
Some examples of remainder marks are shown below.
|

|
Remainder marks are generally simple; they often look like random dots or streaks from a black or colored magic marker. Remainder marks vary from the discreet, to the flamboyant, to the apparently accidental. |
|

|
Sometimes symbols are used.
Ace Fantasy uses a capital "B" on one edge. My favorite, Simon & Schuster, uses its logo "the sowing man." Not illustrated is the Random House icon of a little house.
|
|

|
A remainder mark no longer in use that might be found on older books is purple dye sprayed over the entire top or bottom edge of the book, giving a speckled effect. At one time, this was used by Doubleday, Delacort, and possibly other publishers. Both of the books shown at left are Doubledays, from the 1980s. |
|

|
A remainder mark on the top of the book, however discreet, is worse than one on the bottom, because it can be seen when the book is shelved. |
|

|
While not classed as remainder marks, other stamps and markings applied to the edges of books usually reduce the value not only by their presence but often by what they represent.
It is common to find a "used" stamp on one or more page edges of text books that are sold back to campus bookstores. In addition to the stamp on the page edges, these books are often full of highlighting, underlining, and marginal notes made by their former student owners. |
|

|
Libraries frequently mark not only the page edges of their books, but also many interior pages.
Books discarded from library collections are not generally considered collectible. If the ex-library (sometimes abbreviated ex-lib) designation applies, it should always be included in the book's description. (Note that the term ex libris means "from the library of..." and usually denotes a book from a private collection. It does not mean the same thing as ex-library.)
Books described as "ex-library, with all the usual markings" or similar language may contain some or all of the characteristic defacements.
Due date slips and card pockets. If these have been removed, they may leave behind glue stains or torn and abraded paper.
Ownership stamps. These will usually appear multiple times in a book. They may be found on the title page, text pages, upper or lower page edges, or the inside covers.
Cataloging Information. Notes and codes used for cataloging the book
Inventory control strips and withdrawn stamps. Books that are obviously from a library collection but that do not bear a withdrawn stamp should be purchased with caution, since they may not have been actually deacquisitioned. |
|

|
A NOT FOR RESALE stamp may be seen on remaindered books that have been distributed to schools, prisons or other institutions. This is generally thought to reduce the value of the book - although not quite as much as a library tamp.
On the other hand, review copies may also be marked NOT FOR RESALE. This is one of the few cases where a page edge marking does not necessarily reduce the value. Some collectors consider having a review copy, which is identical to the portions of the same printing offered for sale, to be a plus. | |
